20 Days Spotlight on Tanzanian Endemics Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Dar es Salaam

Arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport, where your guide will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. Relax after your journey and receive a detailed briefing about the exciting birding adventure ahead.


Day 2 – Fly to Pemba Island

Take a morning flight to beautiful Pemba Island. Spend the afternoon exploring coastal forests and plantations while searching for the island’s famous endemic birds, including the Pemba Green Pigeon, Pemba Scops Owl, and Pemba White-eye.


Day 3 – Birding on Pemba Island

Enjoy a full day exploring different habitats across Pemba Island. Visit forests, farmland, and coastal areas in search of additional endemic species, colorful sunbirds, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and seabirds while enjoying spectacular Indian Ocean scenery.


Day 4 – Pemba to Morogoro

After breakfast, fly back to Dar es Salaam before continuing by road to Morogoro. Enjoy birdwatching opportunities along the journey as the landscape changes from coastal plains to the foothills of the Eastern Arc Mountains.


Day 5 – Birding in the Uluguru Mountains

Spend the day exploring the lush forests of the Uluguru Mountains, one of Tanzania’s richest biodiversity hotspots. Search for the Uluguru Bushshrike, Uluguru Greenbul, Loveridge’s Sunbird, and many forest specialists found only in this mountain range.


Day 6 – Ukaguru Mountains Birding

Travel to the Ukaguru Mountains for another rewarding day of birdwatching. Walk through montane forests while searching for rare endemic birds, colorful flycatchers, greenbuls, robins, and forest warblers.


Day 7 – Kilombero Floodplain & East Udzungwa Mountains

Drive toward the Kilombero Valley and spend the day birding around the famous floodplain. Search for the Kilombero Weaver, Kilombero Cisticola, White-tailed Cisticola, African Skimmer, Lesser Jacana, and numerous wetland birds before continuing to the East Udzungwa area.


Day 8 – East Udzungwa Forest Birding

Day 9 – Miombo Woodlands & Mikumi

Drive to Mikumi National Park while birding through the extensive Miombo woodlands. Search for Miombo Warblers, Pale-billed Hornbills, Livingstone Flycatchers, woodpeckers, barbets, and numerous raptors before arriving at your lodge.


Day 10 – Mikumi to East Usambara Mountains

After breakfast, travel to the East Usambara Mountains, one of Africa’s oldest rainforest ecosystems. Enjoy birdwatching along the scenic drive before settling into your forest lodge.


Day 11 – Birding in Amani Nature Reserve

Spend the day exploring Amani Nature Reserve, home to some of Tanzania’s rarest endemic birds. Search for the Amani Sunbird, Usambara Akalat, Green-headed Oriole, African Broadbill, and many other forest specialists.


Day 12 – Another Day in East Usambara Mountains

Continue exploring different forest trails in search of additional endemic and near-endemic bird species while enjoying outstanding photography opportunities in the lush rainforest.


Day 13 – East to West Usambara Mountains

Travel to the beautiful West Usambara Mountains. Birdwatch along the route before arriving at your mountain lodge surrounded by cool forests and breathtaking scenery.


Day 14 – Birding in West Usambara Mountains

Spend the day exploring the forests of the West Usambara Mountains. Search for Usambara Eagle-Owl, Usambara Akalat, forest robins, greenbuls, sunbirds, and many colorful endemic bird species.


Day 15 – West Usambara to South Pare Mountains

After breakfast, continue to the South Pare Mountains. Enjoy birdwatching in dry-country habitats where several regional specialties and endemic birds can be found.


Day 16 – South Pare Mountains to Arusha

Begin the morning with birdwatching in the South Pare Mountains before driving to Arusha. In the afternoon, visit the nearby plains in search of the rare Beesley’s Lark and other dry-country bird species.


Day 17 – Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Travel to Tarangire National Park for an afternoon game drive. Birdwatch among giant baobab trees while searching for Yellow-collared Lovebirds, Tanzanian Red-billed Hornbills, Kori Bustards, hornbills, bee-eaters, and many raptors. Large elephant herds and other wildlife are commonly seen.


Day 18 – Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

Day 19 – Full Day Birding in Serengeti National Park

Day 20 – Serengeti to Arusha & Departure
