Overview

Tanzania’s safari, on foot

Udzungwa Mountains National Park sits within the Eastern Arc Mountains, an ancient chain of ranges famed for exceptional biodiversity and species found nowhere else on Earth. Unlike Tanzania’s savannah parks, Udzungwa is not built around game drives. It’s a place for hiking, rainforest trekking, waterfalls, endemic monkeys, birdwatching and forest landscapes that shift dramatically with elevation.

Covering approximately 1,990 square kilometres, the park protects habitat ranging from lowland forest to high mountain terrain — and its most famous sight, Sanje Falls, cascades through the forest across three dramatic levels.

Why Udzungwa

Four things that make this park different

Sanje Falls

A spectacular multi-level waterfall dropping 170 metres through lush forest — one of the tallest waterfalls in Tanzania’s national park system.

Primates found nowhere else

The Udzungwa red colobus and Sanje mangabey are both endemic to these mountains, making Udzungwa a must for primate-focused travellers.

An Eastern Arc biodiversity hotspot

Ancient, long-isolated forests have allowed unique species to evolve, giving Udzungwa the second-largest biodiversity of any national park in Africa.

A safari you explore on foot

Rather than vehicle-based game drives, Udzungwa is experienced through hiking trails — forest sounds, canopy movement and waterfall views replace the dust of a Land Cruiser.

Outstanding birdwatching

Over 400 bird species, including forest specialists tied to the Eastern Arc, make Udzungwa one of Tanzania’s most rewarding birding destinations.

Four vegetation zones, one park

From tropical rainforest to miombo woodland, grassland and highland forest, Udzungwa’s elevation range packs remarkable habitat variety into a single park.

Wildlife

Who you’ll meet on an Udzungwa forest hike

Udzungwa Red Colobus

Endemic to these mountains, this reddish-brown and grey monkey is one of the park’s signature sightings, often spotted moving through the canopy in troops.

Sanje Mangabey

A highly restricted, highly sought species found nowhere else on Earth. Social and forest-dwelling, a sighting is a genuine highlight for primate enthusiasts.

Black-and-White Colobus

Adapted to life in the trees, these striking monkeys are easy to recognise by their contrasting coats as they move through the forest canopy.

Sykes’ Monkeys

Active and social, Sykes’ monkeys feed on fruit and leaves throughout Udzungwa’s forest habitats and are a frequent trailside encounter.

Yellow baboon

Yellow Baboons

Adaptable and social, yellow baboons occur along forest edges, feeding on fruit, seeds and insects across several habitat types.

African elephant

Forest Elephants

Part of the wider ecosystem, elephants move through Udzungwa’s dense forest — sightings are far less predictable here than on open savannah.

Also present in Udzungwa: bushbuck, duikers, the recently discovered grey-faced sengi, chameleons, and an extraordinary variety of butterflies, frogs and forest insects.

Sanje Falls

Udzungwa’s most famous natural attraction

Sanje Falls drops through the forest across three dramatic levels, and the hike up to it is as much a part of the experience as the waterfall itself — passing monkeys, birds and butterflies along the way as the sound of water grows louder.

At the top, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views over the surrounding forest and, on a clear day, the lowlands of the Kilombero Valley below.

Hiking & Trekking

Explore the forest on foot

Unlike Tanzania’s vehicle-based safari parks, Udzungwa is built for walking. Designated trails wind through tropical rainforest, montane forest and open ridgelines, with routes ranging from an easy half-day walk to the demanding multi-day trek to Mwanihana Peak.

Along the way, expect forest sounds, monkey troops overhead, birdlife hidden in the canopy, and mountain scenery that rewards every step of elevation gained.

Birdlife

More than 400 species call Udzungwa home

Dense forest and a wide elevation range make Udzungwa one of Tanzania’s most rewarding birding destinations, with several species tied closely to the Eastern Arc Mountains.

Landscape

Four vegetation zones across one mountain range

Tropical Rainforest

Lower slopes of dense, humid forest support the greatest concentration of Udzungwa’s primates and birdlife.

Montane Forest

Higher elevations bring cooler, mist-fed forest with ferns, mosses and ancient trees found nowhere else.

Miombo Woodland

Open, deciduous woodland on the drier slopes offers a completely different feel from the rainforest below.

Grassland & Steppe

Scattered open areas at higher elevations provide sweeping viewpoints over the surrounding valleys.

Best Time to Visit

Weather matters more here than on a game drive

Because hiking is the main activity, trail conditions shape the ideal visit: dry and comfortable underfoot from June to October, greener and wetter with more dramatic waterfalls from November to December, lush and photogenic in January and February, and wettest — with slippery trails — from March to May.
