Overview

Tanzania’s most diverse safari in a single day

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most diverse and scenic wildlife destinations. Located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, large elephant herds, baboons, giraffes, hippos, flamingos and the shallow alkaline waters of Lake Manyara itself.

Although relatively compact compared with Serengeti, Manyara packs a remarkable variety of habitats into a small area. A single game drive can take you from groundwater forest and acacia woodland to open grassland, wetlands and the lake shore — all beneath the dramatic backdrop of the Rift Valley wall.

Why Lake Manyara

A safari experience unlike any other northern park

Tree-climbing lions

Lions relaxing on branches above the safari vehicle — one of the most unusual and memorable big-cat sightings in Africa.

Forest elephants

Watch elephants move through dense groundwater forest, a completely different setting from the open plains of Serengeti.

Great Rift Valley escarpment

A dramatic wall of rock rising above the park, giving Lake Manyara some of the most striking scenery in northern Tanzania.

Flamingos & 400+ bird species

The alkaline lake can draw large flocks of flamingos, alongside pelicans, storks and hundreds of other recorded species.

Groundwater forest

A lush evergreen forest fed by underground springs, a striking contrast to the dry landscapes elsewhere in northern Tanzania.

Several habitats in one drive

Move from forest to woodland, grassland, wetland and lake shore within a single, relatively compact game drive.

Easy to combine

Conveniently located between Arusha and Ngorongoro, making it a simple addition to any Northern Tanzania itinerary.

Perfect for a short safari

A single full day is often enough to see the highlights, making it ideal for travellers with limited time.

Canoeing when conditions allow

Water-based experiences on the lake, when water levels and regulations permit, offer a different perspective entirely.

Wildlife

Who you’ll meet on a Lake Manyara game drive

Tree-climbing lion in Tanzania

Tree-Climbing Lions

Lions here are sometimes seen resting on branches — behaviour linked to escaping insects, heat, or gaining a better vantage point.

African elephant

African Elephants

Regularly seen moving through the park’s forest and woodland habitats, feeding and gathering in family groups.

Olive baboon in Tanzania

Olive Baboons

Large, highly social troops seen along roadsides and through the forest, always entertaining to watch.

Blue monkey in Lake Manyara National Park

Blue Monkeys

Forest-dwelling primates that favour Manyara’s groundwater forest canopy, feeding on fruit and leaves.

Giraffes in savanna

Giraffes

Often seen browsing acacia woodland with the Rift Valley escarpment rising dramatically behind them.

African buffalo

African Buffalo

Powerful herbivores found across grassland and woodland, often gathering close to water.

Hippopotamus

Hippos

Strongly associated with Manyara’s wetlands, spending the day submerged before becoming active at dusk.

Lesser flamingo, Tanzania

Flamingos

The lake’s shallow alkaline waters can attract large flocks when conditions are right, though numbers vary by season.

Also present in Lake Manyara: Zebras, wildebeest, leopards, warthogs, vervet monkeys, impalas, waterbuck, dik-diks, spotted hyenas, and a wide range of waterbirds and raptors including pelicans, storks, herons, kingfishers and African fish eagles.

Signature Sighting

Lions that climb trees

Lions are not normally known for spending time in trees, which is exactly what makes Lake Manyara’s tree-climbing lions so memorable. They may climb to escape insects, find shade, catch a breeze, or simply get a better view over the surrounding landscape.

Seeing a lion relaxing on a branch above the safari vehicle is one of the most talked-about experiences in Tanzania — though as with any wild behaviour, it’s never guaranteed on every visit.

Landscape

Groundwater forest beneath the Rift Valley wall

Unlike seasonal forests that depend mainly on rainfall, Manyara’s groundwater forest is fed by underground springs, staying lush even within the broader dry landscape of northern Tanzania. Driving through it at the start of a safari feels dramatically different from the open grasslands found elsewhere in the region.

To the west, the Great Rift Valley escarpment rises sharply above the park, creating one of the most dramatic scenic backdrops on the Northern Circuit.

Landscape

Five habitats within a single, compact park

Groundwater Forest

Dense evergreen forest providing shade and shelter for elephants, monkeys and baboons.

Acacia Woodland

Important browsing habitat for giraffes and cover for predators moving through the park.

Open Grasslands

Supports zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and giraffe, with clear sightlines for predators.

Wetlands

Home to hippos and a large variety of waterbirds, changing with seasonal water levels.

Lake Shore

Feeding grounds for birds and access to water, with an appearance that shifts through the year.

Best Time to Visit

A year-round destination, best in the dry season

June to October’s dry season generally offers the best wildlife-viewing conditions, with less dense vegetation and comfortable weather. November–December’s short rains and January–February’s green season bring fresh vegetation and strong birdwatching, while March–May’s long rains create lush, quieter scenery, though some roads can become more challenging.
