West Kilimanjaro Accommodation | Adventure Makers Tanzania
Where To Stay

Kilimanjaro’s quieter, wilder western face

West Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania’s least visited safari areas — open plains and Maasai concessions bordering Kenya’s Amboseli, with some of the biggest, oldest tusker elephants left in East Africa and views of Kilimanjaro that most travelers never see. There’s no park boundary here, so night drives, walking safaris, and time with local Maasai communities are all on the table.

Below are the two properties we work with in this area — one built and run by the Maasai themselves, the other a classic tented camp in a private concession. Tell us your budget and travel dates, and our team will build the rest of your Tanzania itinerary around the one that fits.

West Kilimanjaro

Two very different bases, one uncrowded corner of Tanzania

One is a community-run cultural lodge focused on Maasai life and sustainability; the other a classic private-concession tented camp built around big tuskers and mountain views. Both sit well outside the usual northern circuit route.

Africa Amini Life

Foot of Kilimanjaro, 200-hectare nature reserve

A Maasai-built and Maasai-run lodge set inside its own 200-hectare reserve, where all profits go back into local community projects. Solar-powered bungalows come with rain showers and Maasai-style furnishings, and the kitchen grows much of its own produce for home-cooked Swahili and Maasai meals. Spear-throwing, herb walks, and permaculture demonstrations are included free of charge.

Kambi ya Tembo

Sinya concession, north face of Kilimanjaro

A classic tented camp on a 600-square-kilometre private concession bordering Amboseli, with uninterrupted views of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, and the surrounding volcanic peaks. It’s one of the few places in Africa where you can still see bull elephants over 50 years old carrying enormous tusks, and since it sits outside any national park, night drives and guided walks are both permitted.
